Welcome to the School of Hospitality and Tourism Management (SHTM). It is one of the oldest academic units having been established as the Department of Institutional Management which has since grown to a School over the years.
Hospitality &Tourism industry is one of the largest foreign exchange earners in Kenya and contributes 10% to the GDP as well as the economy. The local industry in Kenya faces challenges in meeting the needs of National tourism development agendas and Vision 2030. This concept, coupled with the fact that Kenya is one of the most significant tourist destinations in Africa, means that there is an increasing urgency to develop competent tourism professionals.
Murang’a University’s school of hospitality and tourism management has identified these gaps and is developing solutions and new knowledge through innovations in tourism and product development so as to enhance the competitiveness of both destinations and enterprises.
The University is committed to advancing such core values through advanced training and research to a level that meets the dynamic needs of the region’s tourism sectors.
The school and respective departments are committed to ensuring that academia is responsive to the needs of the hospitality industry. It is an important and critical sector for the economy. There is a need to provide quality and develop an equally dynamic labour force able to address the challenges facing the tourism sector in totality.
